Quick Summary
China's entry requirements have been significantly relaxed since 2023. The key options are:
- Visa-free transit (144h / 72h): Most major nationalities can transit through designated ports without a visa
- Visa-free entry: 13+ countries have mutual visa-free agreements with China
- Tourist Visa (L): Standard option for most travelers
- 10-year visa: Available for US, Canada, UK, and several other nationalities
Always check the latest requirements with your local Chinese embassy or the National Immigration Administration before traveling. Policies change frequently.
144-Hour Transit Visa Exemption
How It Works
Foreign nationals from 54 countries can stay in designated Chinese cities for up to 144 hours (6 days) without a visa, provided they:
- Hold a valid passport (valid for 6+ months)
- Have a confirmed onward ticket to a third country/region
- Enter and exit through designated ports
The 144-hour window starts from midnight the day after entry, not from arrival time.
Eligible Countries (Selected)
US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, UAE, Qatar, and 40+ others.
Full list: Check the National Immigration Administration website.

❌ Invalid: New York → Shanghai → Beijing (both in China, not third country)
72-Hour Transit (Legacy)
Some ports still offer 72-hour transit (being phased out in favor of 144h). Always confirm which applies at your port of entry.

| Brunei | 15 days | Tourism, business, transit |
| Japan | 15 days (reciprocal, from 2025) | Tourism, business |

Note: Visa-free entry typically requires a passport valid for 6+ months, proof of accommodation, and a return ticket.

Practical Tips
Before You Travel
- Register your accommodation: Foreigners must register with local police within 24 hours of arrival if staying at hotels (hotels handle this automatically). If staying with friends or in private accommodation, registration is your responsibility.
- Fill out the customs declaration: Most travelers get a customs declaration form on arrival. Keep it with your passport.
- SIM card at airport: Get a China SIM immediately on arrival for WeChat and Alipay.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Don't overstay: Overstaying, even by one day, results in fines and potential future visa denials.
- Don't assume visa-free applies to you: Always verify before booking flights.
- Don't confuse Hong Kong/Macau: These are separate immigration zones. Transit there does not count as "third country" for 144h transit.
- Keep your departure ticket: Immigration officers may ask to see proof of onward travel.
